Quick pick: which one fits you?
Economy
A comfortable reclining seat and the lowest fare. It's on almost every train. Snacks, light meals and drinks are sold on board. On a day trip in the Québec City–Windsor Corridor, Economy is all most people need.
- Best for: Corridor trips of a few hours, solo travellers, students, flexible budgets
- Think twice for: overnight trips. There's no bed, and two nights sitting up is hard going.
Business class
Offered on most Corridor routes (Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Québec City and more). You get a wider seat with more legroom, meals and drinks served at your seat, and lounge access at major stations before you board.
- Best for: work trips, seniors, anyone who wants a quieter car and a meal included
- Tip: on a busy weekday the price gap over Economy can be small. Ask us to compare both.
Sleeper Plus: berths and private cabins
Sleeper Plus is for the overnight and multi-day trains: The Canadian (Toronto–Vancouver), The Ocean (Montréal–Halifax) and some remote routes such as Winnipeg–Churchill. Meals in the dining car and access to the lounge and dome cars are included, and so are non-alcoholic drinks.
Berth
Facing seats by day that become upper and lower bunks at night, closed off with a heavy curtain rather than a door.
- Shared washroom and shower in the car
- Good for solo travellers on a budget
- Lower berth has a window and more room
Cabin for 1
A compact private room with a seat by day and a single bed at night, plus your own toilet and sink.
- Lockable door
- Shared shower in the car
- Limited number per train
Cabin for 2
Two seats by day and bunk beds at night, with a private washroom with toilet and sink.
- Lockable door
- Shared shower in the car
- Some cabins can be joined for families of four
Prestige (The Canadian)
The top tier, only on The Canadian. A much larger cabin with a lounge seat by day and a double bed at night, your own shower and toilet, meals with alcoholic drinks included, and priority access to the train's lounge and dome cars. There are very few Prestige cabins on each departure, so they're often booked months ahead.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a berth and a cabin?
A berth is a bunk closed off with a curtain, using shared washrooms. A cabin is a small private room with a lockable door and its own toilet and sink. Showers are shared in both.
Do sleeper fares include meals?
Yes. Sleeper Plus and Prestige include meals in the dining car. Prestige also includes alcoholic drinks. In Economy, food and drinks are sold on board.
Is Business class worth it on Toronto–Montréal?
For many travellers, yes: a wider seat, meals and drinks, and lounge access. The price difference changes by date, so call and we'll compare both for your train.
Can a family of four share a cabin?
On some trains, two adjoining cabins can be combined. Availability is limited, so ask us early.
Is Stars on Land VIA Rail?
No. Stars on Land is an independent travel agency and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official representative of VIA Rail or any rail operator.
